Notas | For Independence Day weekend (US), I decided to liberate myself from my own better judgement and finish Lekala 2313 in an unbalanced plaid shirting. I've had my eye on this pattern ever since it hit the website and imagined using it with some Liberty lawn I've been saving for a special project. Unfortunately, I didn't appreciate the scale and when it printed out, found that it was HUGE - much more a "tunic" than a blouse, to my mind. However, I had a lot of a vintage plaid (something my Dad would have worn in the 90's...) from an estate lot, and thought to try the pattern out anyway. The Good: I love the placket design! All the pieces fit together well, as per usual Lekala. If nothing else, this was a good exercise in pattern matching - it was a real brain-melter trying to mark plaid elements and place pieces correctly. I still think I could have done better with the neckline placement, but I'm shamelessly soliciting applause for the vertical plaid match along the front seam. (Please. I might be scarred for life.) The Bad: I know Lekala patterns aren't meant for beginners, but the instructions said nothing about understitching the facing, or stay stitching the neckline. Both are elements of good construction and could easily have been included in the directions. I think my contrast fabric might not be drapey enough to do justice to this design. It's a little stiff. The Ugly: What is up with the size of this thing??? The fashion pic on the website looks hip length to me, but when I made it up the side hem hits at fingertip length, and the center front and back are longer. It's VERY boxy. One of the reasons I love Lekala is that my bust is very large compared to my underbust/upper chest, so custom fit is wonderful. This is in no way fitted - very tent-like. |
