Notas | While I have made several Lekala skirts and perfected the fit, this was my first Lekala top, so I decided to make it “straight out of the packet” and see what it was like. The top fits beautifully over my waist and high hip, but is much too tight over the bust. The pattern suggests using a "stretch knit", so I chose a cotton jersey from my stash with only a little stretch across the width. The instructions suggest a "medium to high stretch jersey", which I didn’t see until after I had cut out the top, so perhaps a looser knit with more stretch would have been better. CHECK THE SUGGESTED FABRICS ON THE DOWNLOADABLE INSTRUCTIONS. In any case, it was rather closer fitting than I prefer, and the armscyes were cut very high up under the armpits, making it uncomfortable. I had to pattern match the two front pieces along the centre front seam, which was a bit fiddly, but I’m really pleased with how that turned out. Like all Lekala patterns, the instructions are dodgy at the best of times, so I just thought the project through, and used my own experience to put it together. The neck and tie edges needs serging before assembly otherwise the keyhole size and shape makeS it very difficult to serge afterwards. I really like the design of this top - it’s a basic summer vest, but the ties and keyhole features make it a bit more dressy. What I didn’t like was the way it was finished. I overlocked the neck / ties and armhole edges, then turned them under and top-stitched as per the instructions, but it’s not a very neat way to finish the ties. My jersey is printed on one side, and plain white on the other, which is visible when tied. Next time I would make a facing so the raw edges of the ties would be enclosed and hidden. I didn’t make any pattern alterations or design changes - I wanted this to be my reference for any future Lekala top patterns, so I made it exactly as it was emailed to me. Lekala have this great free feature where you can request a comparison of 2 different patterns in your size - they overlay one pattern with another so you can compare the fit. I will use this pattern as my baseline and compare any future top patterns with it to get a better idea of fit before I buy. Next time I would make a bigger size, increase the depth of the armscye and I definitely need to make a sway back adjustment. It also gapes at the back neck, which I need to fix. I would definitely make this again, but in a better quality fabric with more stretch. It’s a pretty top, quick and easy to run up. It just needs a bit of tweaking. |
