Notities This dress made for C. as an easter Surprise. The graduated material was a quilt cover I bought new because I liked the colours and because I wanted to play with gathering the skirt instead of doing the pleats on it. I ended up with 5 metres of usable material and 5 buttons for $15AUD which made this a very economical dress. (And I've still got the buttons to use on something else!)

I gathered the skirt instead of sewing the box pleats as I wanted to play with the gathering foot on my machine which did a wonderful job. I had to guesstimate the amount of gathering required for the skirt to fit on the top, fortunately my estimate of how much fabric there was in the skirt was accurate. For the top skirt gather, machine tension set to 10, retarding fabric with finger behind the foot and stitch length at 5. For the base skirt gather, stitch length at 5, tension to 8 and just barely holding the fabric back. I found I could get a tighter gather by simply placing my thumb directly behind the foot which caused the fabric to gather up. I struggled with putting the invisible zip in simply because I was trying to do it late at night. Lesson: Leave it until the morning.

Cutting the dress so that the colouration stayed even between the front and the back was a challenge. I would have liked the bottom ruffle to be the deeper green. I could have cut the dress so that the very pale colour in the ruffle would have been next to C.s face, but that would not suit her so opted instead for the ruffle to be totally different. When the dress was finished, it was lacking that pop that makes a two colour fabric come alive. It looked as fresh as a daisy to me, so I added the line of daisies across the middle. I really like the finished product. Let's hope the wearer does as well.
