I've taken a bit of a break from sewing for the last year or so. Not a complete break, but a slow down. I had to rest up after my daughter's wedding dress. I've been dabbling in hand sewing and decided to use this free pattern with some fabric I found at a flea market and make something out of it.
I sewed this top entirely by hand. You would think that it would take so much longer. Sure it took longer but not that much. I have much more control with hand sewing and it is less noisy. It is more portable. I can do it while watching TV or listening to a podcast.
Anyways, here it is. I liked the pattern overall. It turned out a little looser than expected which is often the case with Lekala. I didn't make a center-back seam. If it was used for shaping I would understand, but it isn't the center seam is completely straight so there is no point to it. The next line was too loose. I used a technique that I read about used in couture sewing to steam and shink the fabric to take it in a bit. That helped some, but it is still a bit looser than I'd like. Others have mentioned taking in the neckline. I also considered making a casing around the neckline and adding some ties. I think I could make that look nice. I may just try to get used to the neckline. In part, I am not used to wearing a scoop neck. On the whole, I'm pretty happy with the result especially since the whole thing cost me less than $2!
